“Sales funnel” is marketing jargon for a genuinely simple idea — and understanding it helps you see exactly where your business might be losing customers. Here's a plain explanation of what a sales funnel is and how it applies to a small business.
The simple idea
A sales funnel is the journey someone takes from first hearing about you to becoming a customer — and eventually a repeat one. It's called a funnel because it's wide at the top (lots of people become aware of you) and narrows as it goes down (fewer become leads, fewer still become customers). At each stage, some people drop off.
The stages of a funnel
1. Awareness
Someone discovers you exist — through a Google search, a referral, social media, or an ad. This is the top of the funnel, the widest part. Getting found (via SEO, ads, or word of mouth) is what fills it.
2. Interest / Consideration
They're now curious and checking you out — visiting your website, reading about your services, comparing you to others. Here they're deciding whether you're worth considering. Your website does the heavy lifting at this stage.
3. Decision
They're ready to act, but need a final nudge — the right offer, clear pricing, reviews that reassure them, an easy way to take the next step. This is where a clear call-to-action converts interest into action.
4. Action
They become a customer — they call, book, or buy. The bottom of the funnel. But it doesn't end here…
5. Loyalty
A great experience turns a one-time customer into a repeat customer and a referrer — feeding new people back into the top of your funnel.
Not sure where your funnel is leaking?
We build websites designed to move visitors through every stage — from finding you to becoming a customer. Let's find the gaps.
Why it's useful to think this way
The funnel is valuable because it shows you where you're losing people. Lots of website visitors but no calls? Your problem is between interest and decision — maybe unclear messaging or a weak call-to-action. No visitors at all? Your problem is awareness — you need to get found. Diagnosing which stage is leaking tells you exactly what to fix instead of guessing.
Your website spans the whole funnel
For most small businesses, the website is the funnel's engine. It helps you get found (awareness), makes the case when people are considering you, gives the reassurance and clear next step at the decision point, makes it easy to act, and can even nurture loyalty afterward. That's why a well-built site is such a high-leverage investment — it's working at every stage at once.
The short version
- A sales funnel is the journey from stranger to customer — wide at top, narrow at bottom.
- Stages: Awareness, Interest, Decision, Action, and Loyalty.
- Thinking in stages shows you exactly where you're losing people.
- Your website works across the whole funnel — which is why it matters so much.
