Your Google Business Profile is the most valuable piece of free real estate a local business has. It's what shows up in Google Maps and the local “map pack,” and for many businesses it drives more calls and visits than the website does. Yet most profiles are half-filled-in and quietly underperforming. Here's how to optimize yours properly.
First, claim and verify it
If you haven't already, search your business name on Google and look for the option to claim or manage the profile. You'll verify ownership (usually by phone, email, or postcard). Until it's verified, you can't control what it says — so this comes first.
Choose the right categories
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Be specific: “Italian restaurant” beats “restaurant,” “emergency plumber” beats “contractor.” Then add relevant secondary categories for the other services you offer. This one step alone often makes a visible difference.
Complete every field
Google rewards complete profiles. Fill in all of it:
- Accurate hours (and special holiday hours) — wrong hours frustrate customers and hurt trust.
- Phone number and website that match your other listings exactly.
- Services and products with descriptions — this adds keywords and clarity.
- A real business description that says what you do and who you serve.
- Attributes (wheelchair accessible, free wifi, women-owned, etc.) where they apply.
Add real photos — and keep adding them
Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks and direction requests. Add real photos of your storefront, your team, your work, and your products — not stock images. Businesses that add fresh photos regularly signal to Google that they're active and open, which helps ranking.

Get reviews and reply to all of them
Reviews are a major local ranking factor and the number-one thing that sways a customer choosing between businesses. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review — thank the good ones and address the bad ones calmly. An active, well-reviewed profile wins.

- Inconsistent name, address, or phone across the web.
- A vague primary category, or the wrong one.
